Trip Report

Artist Point Snowshoe — Saturday, Jan. 9, 2021

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area

Artist point is a beautiful beginner snowshoe destination. It may be expected to fall 2-3 times on the descent at times when it's a *little* steeper if you have cheap snowshoes like my friend, but this is an extremely safe hike. My friend viewed Table Mountain and thought for a bit that was the top, he was happy to find out that's not the case. As others have stated, try your hardest to stay out of the cross country skiers' path. As the path is somewhat imaginary - I would highly recommend downloading offline maps Via Gaia or something similar. You will have service at times, but just knowing you're on the right path is helpful. Even on a Saturday, there were times that we didn't see other snowshowers, just skiers - who's destination we don't know so it's best not to follow. As for logistics, we were a bit confused about where to start as we had to park on the opposite end of the baker ski area. Just to clarify, you start at the Bagley Lake trailhead. You'll see a "ramp" with a lot of people putting on their skis/snowshoes. This path then splits in two with a rope, take the right path into the "backcountry" and head on back.
