Trip Report

Corral Pass Snowshoe — Saturday, Jan. 16, 2021

Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410
Fresh elk hoof 10 feet from fresh cougar scat.

I went to check on snow levels and to avoid the masses at most TH's.  I was shocked to see 6 cars at the gate/TH at the end of FS 7174.  This area is normally one of my go to solitude areas. Today, I saw two couples on their way down while I was going up.  I am guessing the other cars were doing Deep Creek or White River.

This is a walk/snowshoe up the closed Corral Pass Rd.

Snow starts at 2 mi or 3,900 ft.  I went another mile on frozen crunchy snow when I noticed fresh cougar scat and a fresh, bloody elk hoof.  I decided to turn around at that point which was 3 miles from the gate.

I did notice a significant amount of elk droppings the entire way up.  There must be a heard that uses this area in the winter.

There are a few areas with significant downed trees across the road.  It does seem doubled then a month ago.

Example of trees across the road.
Views at 4,000 ft.
