Cama Beach Historical State Park, Camano Island State Park — Monday, Feb. 1, 2021

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area
Jasper, our friends' sweet trail buddy.

Enjoyed a cold and wet walk through the woods with some friends, first up to Cranberry Lake from Cama Beach Historical State Park and then down to the beach via the Cross Island Trail that ends at Camano Island State Park. Ample parking at Cama Beach Historical State Park and there were a few restrooms open for visitors.

Not much to see at Cranberry Lake this time of year, although we did encounter what appeared to be the hard work of a beaver that had chomped right through a log near the lake (photo below). The main trail to the lake kind of peters out into a bog and a small side trail peters out into thick brush. I had read that you could walk to the far end of the lake but perhaps this time of year the trail is submerged underwater - would have to visit again in the spring or summer to see if we could go further.

We then backtracked and turned left onto the Cross Island Trail to Camano Island State Park. Very pleasant and flat walk (a portion of which is on the side of a road) until you make your way down to the beach and then have to climb back up again. We spotted a windsurfer ripping across the water from the trail. Great trail for a gentle and socially distanced walk in the woods.

Highly, highly recommend stopping at The Baked Café for a quick meal while you're on Camano Island. The burgers and breakfast sandwiches are just killer. My fiancé was very pleased that he was able to order a double cheeseburger for breakfast - that sure doesn't happen every day!

Signs of a hard working beaver.
Spot the windsurfer.
View from one of the Camano Island State Park high bluff trails.
