I had read and heard great things about this trail from experienced backpackers, but it seems that many others have heard the same as the trail was a super highway of backpackers today. I turned around after a mile after passing 12-15 other hikers coming down in groups of 3 and 4 and a few right behind me, many with dogs. Not my scene!

Becky Andrade on Lena Lake
I have hiked this trail 3 times in the last month. Each time I've started hiking by 8:30 a.m. and the parking lot has been relatively empty. We go to Lower Lena Lake or a bit beyond prior to turning around and rarely do we see many people. The hike back down usually involves passing a lot of people on their way up, many with dogs. The early start typically gives me the hike I want.

Pre-covid I could hike this in winter and never see a soul. My last hike up in December was so busy - one of my favorite annual hikes that I will save for more “off” time to hike it.
