took advantage of a small window of good weather and decided to check out this trail to try and avoid many people. unfortunately, I was wrong and the parking lot was full. didn't actually run into many people though, passed 1 group coming down as I was going up and on my way down saw another group going up. it was quiet and peaceful mostly. turned around after 2.5 miles up as the weather began to turn. it was snowing/raining when we got back to the rig.
be aware though that snowmobilers also use this trail apparently. we were passed by a number of them at different times. all were driving carefully and were friendly when approaching us

Are snowshoes absolutely necessary right now, or at least when you were there?

I believe it has snowed up there since but I am not certain. The snowmobiles did a pretty good job compacting the snow on the trail up, however, when I stepped off trail to take pictures or make room for the snowmobiles I sank up to just below my knees and I was wearing snowshoes.
