The trail is in great shape (only one downed tree we had to hop over) and is bare until about 1/2 mile from the top, where it becomes highly recommended to wear microspikes due to the icy/slippery slope. There is only about 2-3 inches of snow at the summit, so snowshoes were unnecessary today. There were not many views to be had through the fog and clouds, but the Gray Jays were out in force and kept us company while we had lunch at the east viewpoint. If you’ve ever wanted to pet some wild Birds, this is the place to do it. They are brave enough to come and land on your sandwich that you’re holding in your hand, but they aren’t quite smart enough to dodge snowballs (softly thrown, of course). Be sure to check out the Chimacum Cafe for a post hike slice of Pie (many varieties) if you’re headed back in the direction of the Hood Canal Bridge.
