We backpacked 1 night, parked where WTA map takes you which is actually named “Quincy Lake Water Access” on Gaia. There is a closed gate and no signs that say no overnight parking so we hoped for the best. When the gate is open, there are lots further down that explicitly say they allow for overnight parking.
We camped along the shore of Ancient Lake in a spot clearly designated for a tent. Upon exploring more that day and the next, we found make other sites like this, with a little fire area already made (note you do have to pack in your own wood). You also have to pack in all of your water - I brought 5L for my dog and I for 2 days, and that was also enough for cocoa at night, and coffee in the am!
The trails are mixed use and we saw trail runners, and many horses as well! Everyone was very courteous.
Daytime temps were great but it got very cold and windy at night. On top of that, coyotes were yipping often and it sounded like there were a lot of them. It wasn’t my best nights sleep.. maybe bring ear plugs?
We made this a loop by exiting on the other side of Ancient Lake, up the ridge and back to the road past the “H lake Water Access”. Then we just walked the road back to the car.
All in all it was beautiful and tons of fun!
