White Salmon Road Snowshoe — Sunday, Feb. 21, 2021

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area

Parking is scarce and tight and I received damage to my vehicle while someone else was attempting to back out. Please prepare to have 4WD if you plan to park there, and be willing to back your vehicle very close to a large snow wall.

The trail had fresh powder and was very thick on the trees. I think this is the last day I would be up on that road for a while as avy danger was very apparent. I could hear large avalanches in the surrounding areas and even the heavy tree snow on either side of the trail were creating small little slides. On the way out, the snow was turning more to a rain and the fluffy powder which once was started to turn to a heavy slush. On top of the rain should come more fresh snow, which will in turn lead to even more avy risk.

I did not do this with snowshoes and it was  a major postholing workout. At my turnaround point I was postholing to my waist. Appx 6mi
