Mann Rd. Trail — Friday, Feb. 26, 2021

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - West
View from where I turned around. All this logging debris made it tough to go up

Was in the area, so I did a little exploring today. The Mann Road trail is at the end of Mann road, which is on the south side of the Skykomish River in Sultan. From Hwy 2 take the bridge over the Skykomish River from downtown Sultan. At the T intersection, take a left and drive all the way to the end of Mann Rd. There is a blue gate here with ample parking.

It appears that there are quite a few trails that weave in and out of the  multiple logging roads that are there. I took a few of them but turned around on them as they were filled up with water with all the melting snow. The trails looked well maintained.

There is a nice view spot at around 900 ft. I got there by following the  main road for about 0.8 mile and then taking a right. This road gains some good elevation. After a 1/4 mile take a left. This road turns into a trail pretty much at the start. Trail drops down and then back up crossing a small creek, then goes thru the forest before joining a abandoned road. This trail switchbacks up to the view spot. There is even a old fire ring there with a wooden crate for a bench.

After this the trail was more overgrown and then just stopped. There was a faint trail that headed straight up. I ended up losing this faint trail in the snow. I decided to go straight up thru a clearing. It went ok for a bit until I hit a steep open logged out area. It was just to difficult with all the deadfall, snags , and snow to go any further.I was trying to get up to a high point at around  1900 ft, but did not succeed. I turned around at 1600 ft or so. There was a pretty good view looking up at I think Ten-Four Mountain and also across the Skykomish River and some peaks there.

Not a bad place for exploring. It looks like there are a network of roads and trails that are not on the map. GPS route below. Ended up logging 6 miles and 1400 ft gain.

Just a hiker on Mann Rd. Trail

I had to log in and thank you for the laugh! I am almost way beyond beating the crap out of myself thrashing through the jungles of Pacific NW forests. I can remember some adventures fondly and others a bit less so.

Again, thanks for the chuckle.

slash hiking

Kidz, I learned in mid-April of 1970 to NEVER do this kind of fun. I talked a sucker into going with me to Barclay Lake and the whole trail area had recently been logged. We couldn't find the trailhead so we went to where the creek intersects Hwy 2 and decided to "walk" up the creek because it comes from the lake, so, what could go wrong?, Well, after many hours in the temperate jungle, at one time looking down through the brush and realizing I was on alder branches at least 10 feet above the creek (!), we did get to the lake--tired and wet and we couldn't get a fire going for hours. What a blast we had! I would like to say I've never repeated that but, young and dumb, I did, trying to get to White Rock Lakes by following Downey Creek all the way up. Well, that's another story.......

I should no better, as I have been on a few of these logged out areas with Ups n Downs. They look so easy to get thru from afar. We told a couple of friends there would be a little off trail going up to Mt Gardner. Not sure if they will ever go hiking with us again, after having to go thru that..haha

jungle

Been there, done that. I try not to do it any more. I don't even like ducking under logs across the trail any more.

Ha! So true! It is getting harder these days to convince my knees to do anything more than just propel myself forward. A waist high log? No problem! Let me just ... kinda ... tumble over? oof!
