Tommy Thompson Trail — Thursday, Mar. 25, 2021

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area

This paved trail follows an old spur line of the BNSF Railroad from March Point into Anacortes.

To start in Anacortes, follow 34th Street eastbound to the waterfront.  There is no parking lot, but there is plenty of curbside parking.  The paved trail heads south, past two very interesting private homes, then past an RV park, then enters the causeway and trestle that cross the large, but shallow, Fidalgo Bay.  I'm no birder, but if shorebirds are your thing, this trail is not to be missed, especially at low tide, I would think.  I saw pintails and many more species that I couldn't identify.

I hiked to the March Point side of the bay, then back, estimated about 4 miles round trip.  It was a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours, when all the high-country trails are snowbound, and likely to be that way for quite some time to come yet.

Note:  There does not appear to be any public parking either at the RV park, or on March Point.  If anyone knows differently, please message me here.

FYI: This trail actually starts in downtown area as sidewalk on 'R' Avenue, near Safeway. Plans are in place to extend it all the way west from downtown to the Ferry landing, and perhaps farther into Washington Park which would mean 7 miles one way. However that is a ways off...

I should add: the trail becomes dedicated at 22nd street.

I'm not sure entirely, but at the roundabout on 22nd and R Ave. There is a public bathroom and what seems to be a small parking lot. Not sure if this is a lot for the trail. Also by the buildings with murals section of the trail that crosses 30th st. Again another public bathroom with a parking lot.
