We took advantage of a weekend of flawless weather in Chelan for a relaxed 2 night backpack along the lakeshore trail. The Lady of the Lake express was only running on alternate days, so it worked out well for us to get dropped off on Friday and picked up Sunday. Starting 4/1 it will be running daily again, however, and this ~18 mile jaunt is definitely doable as an overnight for those inclined.
We got dropped off at Prince Creek around 11 am, under a spotless sky, and hiked to Moore Point (just under 11 miles) in about 5 hours, with lots of stops for pictures and sun-soaking. Trail is in great shape, with some minor obstacles (downed trees, some deeper stream crossings). Nothing even small children can’t handle without support. Mostly burn, easy to hop over, but a few full trees with lots of branches and a position on a steep, exposed section might be challenging for stock. Ample water from stream crossings, and gorgeous views from the campground. Campground is in great shape; clean bear lockers and privy.
Day 2 we hiked to Stehekin; similar conditions except for 2 patches of thicky-thick brush (slide alder?), with one necessary belly crawl while pulling the pack behind. Again, totally passable for people of all ages, but did require getting dirty! Ample water along trail. We camped at Purple Point. Campground in good shape but multiple ticks. No water at spigot, we filled bottles at the lodge water fountain. Clean, good condition bear locker and privies.
Day 3 we took a pleasant, pack-less jaunt to Rainbow Falls. No pastries for us, I don’t think they open until April (alas!), but the falls were gorgeous. More very tidy privies at the falls. We got back around 11, grabbed a celebratory brew at the cafe and boarded the ferry just after 1. We opted for Fields Point Landing; it added 20 minutes to the drive but took an hour off of our sail in and 1.5 hrs off the return. The ferry was delightful and beautiful though, and the crew are outstanding!
Overall a beautiful weekend, with great early season trail conditions and weather. We saw one other couple along our way and that was it.
Do note, this trail is very exposed—if you are fair-skinned, bring your sunblock! The reflection of the lake only doubles the effect and we were glad for our sunglasses and spf.
