We spent a couple of days birdwatching and exploring the Columbia NWR. It is a really huge area and loved it! There is a viewpoint really close to this trail that overlooks the area the Sandhill Cranes migrate through at this time of year. We were able to stop and get a view of the cranes which was great!
Now for the Crab Creek trail - we started from the trailhead pinned here on WTA, the north trailhead. We were there midday on a Friday and were the only ones at that trailhead. There are parts of this trail that seem a bit overgrown and there is a bridge at the beginning that has seen better days. Importantly, we did see a rattlesnake on this trail. It was right in the middle of the trail, rattled at us, then slipped off into the bushes. Once we were sure it was gone we kept hiking but were on high alert the rest of the trail and didn’t see any others.
After this trail we went up to the South trailhead a little further up and hiked a bit of the marsh trail where we saw lots and lots of birds. There were also many more cars here and we did see several people, but most all of the day when we were driving through the refuge we saw very few people.
