Iron Goat Trail — Saturday, May. 15, 2021

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - West
avalanche crossing

Hiked this lovely and interesting trail with two friends. We arrived around 10 am and were done by 2:30, with lots of stops to look at the tunnels and lunch, as well as some slow-moving parts crossing the multiple avalanches that covered the trail. Started at the interpretive trailhead with the train car, right off Highway 2.

Notes:

1. There were around 6 spots on the trail, closer to the eastern end, where an avalanche had covered the trail, making it rather difficult to cross. We, 3 college students, could cross them just fine, but I'd advise that if you're not sure of your balance and ability to climb over large obstacles to be weary. I included some pictures, so you can see what you're up against.

2. There were a couple spots on the trail where there were difficult streams to cross. We had to leap over them or get our feet a little wet, but luckily it was so warm the cold water was refreshing if anything.

3.  There was one section of the trail on the upper grade where water was flowing over the retaining wall and going east it looked like the trail might be lost, just try and keep your feet dry and continue along the wall as best you can. The trail isn't very wide, but I promise it's there.

I would recommend this hike! There were SO many trillium, bleeding heart, and salmonberry flowers. Most of the little creeks were well contained and adorable, my favorite was a waterfall with bright green moss under the water that went under a bridge. Most people put their masks on when we passed. Happy hiking!
