Trip Report

Pyramid Mountain / Pyramid Peak — Wednesday, Jun. 2, 2021

Olympic Peninsula > Northern Coast

This trail is an awesome workout, and absolutely provides a more secluded and extended alternative to Storm King. That being said, the bugs today were awful. From the car to the summit and back, there was not a single stretch of trail where I could stand still for more than 30 seconds without being absolutely swarmed. I kept bug spray in my pack, and reapplied twice throughout the hike, which was effective as long as I kept moving. I don't think I spent more than 2 minutes at the top, just because of how visible and persistent the swarm was. I wore a lightweight gaiter over my nose and mouth, and I would recommend a hat as well for your sanity.

As far as the slide crossing is concerned, it's pretty sketchy. Due to obvious erosion, I'm curious about how much life is left in that crossing. I'm very tall with a high center of gravity, so I opted to stash the poles in my pack and use my hands for support along the rock face. To each their own, but as always, don't climb out onto anything you can't climb off of.
