Decided to do two short lake trails on Mountain Loop Highway, Beaver Lake and Frog Lake. Chose to brave burglars and bears (see previous two trip reports) with the chance to see beavers first. Arrived at the trailhead around 2:30pm. There were zero (!) cars in the lot. The weather was dark and damp which likely kept people away. Toilet at trailhead is in good shape! Ponchoed up and headed out. Trail is well drained and had no issues in the downpour. The scenery is very lush and green with excellent views along the Sauk River. Lots of berries along the trail, some ready to eat, which is likely why bears frequent the area. We saw no signs of bear activity today. Very quickly made it to the lake. The trail mileage is shorter than listed due to the bridge over the lake being damaged. The lake itself is very marsh like so don't expect a deep mountain lake at the end of your hike. The beavers took today off to spend the day in their lodges out of the rain. No real place at the lake to sit and watch so we headed back to our car. Made it back around 4pm without running into a single person. Trail is starting to get over grown in spots, but otherwise in great condition.
