An early morning, (relatively) early season trip to Colchuck!
I camped nearby last night and started hiking this morning at 6:15 a.m., shouldered between two larger groups of hikers. We were able to spread out within the first half mile, and after that point, I felt like I had the trail largely to myself until I reached the lake. I took several snack breaks during the ascent and was only passed by one or two groups each time. (What a joy on this popular trail!)
The lake is GORGEOUS and I spent a bit of time perched on a rock, until I realized that a mountain goat was lurking behind me (and slowly creeping closer). Slightly unnerving, but still a highlight from the day!
A few other thoughts:
- There were 15-20 open parking spaces left when I arrived. I can't imagine that any spaces were left after 7:00 a.m. or so.
- Saw far more people as I was heading out. Based on the swell of crowds that I encountered, it seemed like most people started hiking at 8:30 or 9 a.m.
- The trail is in great shape! A few muddy patches, but the trail to the lake was entirely snow free and the water crossings were easy. I forgot my hiking poles at home, but only wished that I had them for a few, short portions of the descent.
- Total trip time was 6.5 hours (and roughly 9 miles), including ample breaks.
- Could not believe the number of cars parked on the side of the road while I was driving out! (It's a good hike...but not that good, y'all...)

I agree, good, but not that good, to put up with parking challenges and crowds.
