West Fork Humptulips trail is so overgrown and so not maintained as to make it almost imaginary. We camped at Campbell W. Fork Humptulips campground. Nice (free!) campground with lots of giant old-growth trees, and hidden-away picnic tables and campsites. Headed north on the trail , we almost immediately encountered fallen alder tree blocking trail. Hacked our way thru it, then encountered very overgrown trail and turned around. Heading south on trail from campground, the trai quickly came to a stream crossing. There was a log across the river but it was a long crossing, and balance is not my strong suit, so again we turned around.
On the way out from the campground. we stopped at Pete's Creek Trailhead, 3 miles SW of campground. We walked in for perhaps a quarter-mile. Not bad trail conditions, but does not appear to be a spur trail connecting with a river trail - it is the river trail. And trail definitely does not go north toward the campground as the Forest Service map indicates. The Colonel Bob trail also leaves from Pete's Creek trailhead. Didn't sample, but trail looked very steep, rooty, and rocky. We also stopped at the Gorge Bridge trailhead, about 10 more miles down the road. So overgrown that we could barely find the trail opening at the trailhead. Worth stopping at the trailhead to walk on the (auto)bridge and look waaaaaay down at the Humptulips River.
