Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge - Dungeness Spit — Monday, Jun. 28, 2021

Olympic Peninsula > Northern Coast
Anemones in a tide pool

This was the peak day of the Pacific NW’s heat wave and a great day to be at the beach. Our goal was to enjoy the -1.5 low tide. We found multiple types of colorful seaweeds, a chiton, moulted crab shells, tiny crystal clear jellyfish, a tidepool isopod (see video), anemones, laid back gulls, a loon and a family of river otters. It was 95º back in the parking lot and much much hotter than that on the drive back home.

Still life in a tide pool

Please remember that wildlife refuges are for wildlife and to never stack rocks or leave painted objects as it damages critical habitat in these highly protected areas

Zipster on Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge - Dungeness Spit

ForTheLoveOfTrails, as the FWS rules & regulations say, "wildlife comes first on National Wildlife Refuges". Under Prohibited Activities the rules & regs also say, "...disturbing or removing any resources from the Refuge..." So "disturbing" might include stacking rocks or, even, the disturbance of sand and rocks due to walking on the spit. My point is that "disturbing" is ambiguous and the prohibition to stack rocks is open to interpretation. I should add that the tall stacks in my photo were pre-existing and no one in our group created them. Additionally, the painted rock is intended to be REMOVED. Furthermore during our walk, our group picked up & removed plastic debris from the spit. If you are in some way associated with DNWR, please post a more specific list of prohibited activities. Consider adding that to the brochure that's available at the entry kiosk. Thank you.

You should not be defacing or removing rocks, nor encouraging such narcissistic behavior on your social media account.

Dreamer Deceiver, that sure sounds like a scold. Looks like you're not even a WTA financial supporter; instead, you're trolling WTA?! The painter of the rocks is an artist and not me. The source of their rocks is not DNWR. Did you pick up the decorated rock and go to their Instagram account? Your comment about my own social media account is rudely misplaced. I encourage you to stop trolling, take hikes and post useful reports that encourage others to find joy in being on the trails.

Please enjoy what you find and leave nothing yourself. Apart from being against the rules and regs what to you is cute is actually trash once you depart. There are other places (city parks) where you can leave your painted rocks.
