Trip Report

Ruth Mountain — Saturday, Jun. 19, 2021

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area

This is a conditions report for a trip consisting of an overnight where we camped just below the summit of Ruth and climbed Icy Peak the second day.

Snow began consistently at the base of the Hannegan Meadow where the trail begins to switchback up to the Pass. I imagine by now this snow has melted. Consistent and deep snow from the Pass all along Ruth’s arm. The glaciers crevasses are all filled in on the approach, but as we wrapped around the West side to head over to Icy, we saw crevasses starting to open. I have seen this glacier in late season and it’s no joke. So please exercise caution and rope up, even if it “looks chill.”

The traverse/down climb from Ruth to the ridge towards Icy was sketchy as the snow was melting and there are steep couloirs to climb. But we managed by down climbing on rock, and taking the snow couloir on the return.

Summit block scramble on Icy we climbed without ropes but many might find ropes preferable, depending on your comfort level.
