Our car was broken into at the TH while we were backpacking on this trail. Apparently the Wenatchee police know about this as they have gotten many calls about break ins. If you are spending the night, be very cautious and don't leave anything...not just anything valuable but anything. We saw a car next to us with notes in their window to explain what they would find in the car (like "old shoes, cheap sunglasses). That's probably a good idea.
It's too bad because this trail is amazing and beautiful. The trail is in good condition and there would have been beautiful flowers if the heat wave hadn't dried everything out.
The first 2 miles are hot and exposed. At about 2.5 miles there is this amazing talus slope where the air is about 30 degrees cooler - natural air con! There are plenty of campsites some of which are small for 1 tent and and some large for 4-6 tents. We got to a large site about 4.5 miles in which is right on the river (like most of them). The bugs were actually manageable and almost disappeared at sunset which was fabulous. But they didn't totally disappear which meant the bats came out, so cool!
If you want breathtaking views, the first part of this hike isn't going to give you that. But it is a lovely hike along a river with peaceful places to sit and enjoy the shade or sun.

I'm sorry you experienced this while hiking. Although it has been a long time, would you be willing to fill out a Trailhead Crime Report? I've added the link below, which also explains more about what we're doing and has links to a crime map and a spreadsheet of the data we've already collected.

Hi Rheanna - I did file a police report last year and worked with the Wenatchee police for a while, but it led to a number of dead ends. But they said it was helpful since these so often don't get reported due to no signal at the crime scene.

Thanks for filing the police report when this happened. You're right, a lot of the time people don't report these incidents to the police (for various reasons).
