Cutthroat Pass via the Pacific Crest Trail — Monday, Jul. 5, 2021

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20

One of my all time favorite hikes.  Usually up at Cutthroat Pass later in the season as part of a multi-day trip.  First time up here in early July and was therefore surprised by the amount of water and the bugs.  I'd advise high top water proof boots for the next few weeks until the creeks go down.  Also dry socks and shoes back in the car would be a good idea.  I suspect the mosquitos will be less prevalent when things dry up a bit.

Five hours up and down including a lunch break.  Great views intermittently on the very gentle grade lower section and continuously up to the pass.

Did I mention that this is my favorite part of the N. Cascades?   Really ok that the crowds are across the street at Maple Pass.

Did you find this trip report helpful?

Hi MRV1- great report
What was the water situation near the pass?

Water

There were plenty of places that one could filter water beyond Porcupine Creek and the camp below the pass. If you decide to camp at Cutthroat pass I'd filter water at the first camp and then head up. Folks on a multi day trip coming back from Harts Pass said that there really wasn't any water between Granite Pass and Cutthroat.

more on water

Also given my experience later in the summer in past years I wouldn't count on the plethora of little creeks and pools lasting until fall. Now looks like a good time to be up there. Snow crossings are not difficult and there is good water below the pass. I'd read reports from folks going out to Snowy Lakes or Harts pass for conditions further up the PCT.
