Thanks to HoHumHiking and their trip report (located a couple of trip reports back), we decided to follow their exact route (minus the turnoff for the Loowit Falls on Day 2) over the Fourth of July weekend. Thank you to everyone who takes the time to write a trip report. They are SUPER helpful!
Thank you HoHumHiking for posting your route and providing all of the fabulous details. We loved this route and our trip was fantastic. We were looking for a snow-free, overnight backpacking trip with a decent amount of mileage and elevation gain with good payoff views and not a whole lot of crowds. The wildflowers were amazing! This trip certainly delivered!
What's nice about this area is that there are so many other trails to choose from that everyone has plenty of space to explore and spread out.
We were glad we went up and over the Abraham Trail on Day 1, but coming up and down through Windy Pass the next day was a bit sketchy with all of the loose scree and steep drop-offs. Water is scarce so plan accordingly. We had a dry camp at the top of the hill at the jthe Loowit and Ape Canyon Trail junction, but the breathtaking 360 degree views and epic sunrise more than made up for the lack of water. This was my first time exploring the Mount St Helens area and I loved it. I'll be back!
