Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) Section J - Snoqualmie Pass to Stevens Pass, Gravel Lake - Ridge Lake & Kendall Katwalk — Wednesday, Jul. 7, 2021

Snoqualmie Region > Snoqualmie Pass
View from the PCT

I attempted to get to Spectacle Lake via the PCT trailhead at Snoqualmie Pass but was turned around by steep snowfields about a mile past Ridge Lake.  I decided to set up camp at Gravel Lake and go fishing instead!  The trail is 90% melted out, but there are snowfields at a 45+ degree angle on the PCT past Ridge Lake.  I spoke to several other parties who were all turned around by the snow.  There are indications that people have made it in as far as Deep Lake, but they had crampons and ice axes.  If you are thinking of trying to thru hike Section J, it's still too early unless you have the above stated gear.  That said, Ridge and Gravel Lakes (7.5 miles in) are easily reachable right now, and make for a great day hike or overnight destination.

There are a few blowdowns on the PCT but nothing major; mostly duck-unders.  The trail to Gravel Lake takes off to the left (north) just before you get to Ridge Lake.  The path down is steep and gnarly with roots, running water, snow and huge, 6ft tall "stairs" that must have been meant for giants or Ents.  There are good camps along Gravel's western shore and lots of trout in the lake.  I caught a couple medium-sized rainbows and got tons of nibbles, but I would have done better with better bait.  I used these pink trout mallows that attracted the fish like moths to a flame, but they didn't like the taste.  Maybe these picky fish only like organic gluten free bait..

Summary: ~15mi RT w/~2500ft elevation gain; 8ish hours moving time (RT) and many more hours of camping and chilling time.

"The road must be trod, but it will be very hard. And neither strength nor wisdom will carry us far upon it. This quest may be attempted by the weak with as much hope as the strong. Yet it is oft the course of deeds that move the wheels of the world: Small hands do them because they must, while the eyes of the great are elsewhere."
