Trip Report

Fremont Lookout, Huckleberry Creek — Sunday, Jul. 11, 2021

Mount Rainier Area > NE - Sunrise/White River
Mt Rainier from Fremont Lookout

When going to Sunrise, get there early.  The parking lot fills up quickly and most of the cars in front of us on 410 were also heading up to Sunrise.  Our goal was Fremont Lookout with a side trip to Huckleberry Basin if possible.  Trails in good condition going up to Fremont, dusty with all the foot traffic.  By the time we arrived at the lookout, there were already a dozen or more people on it with another dozen or so parked out on the rocks taking in the views, getting pictures and or eating a snack.  It was a blue bird day and temps quickly warmed since there is little to no shade on this trail.  On the hike down, 5 steps forward, stop and wait for a group to pass and repeat all the way down to frozen lake where the trail was wider.  The trail is snow free and there's a couple "icebergs" floating in frozen lake right now as it melts out.

We passed the turnoff to Huckleberry Creek by accident and decided to hike back up to the turnoff.  From there, the trail climbs steeply and the trail is rocky, uneven until you reach the saddle.  From there the trail is easy to follow down with beautiful views of the valley.  Lots of chipmunks, marmots and signs of goats even though we never actually saw one.  Quite the difference between Fremont trail and this one.  It was quiet and peaceful and only ran into 3 people returning from a backpacking trip.  As you make your way through the switchbacks, there are times you have to hike through a little bit of snow which wasn't difficult and shouldn't take long to fully melt out.  The basin was beautiful as well.  Took in the beauty for a bit and then returned the same way
