Trip Report

Mount Persis — Monday, Jul. 19, 2021

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - West

Intended on trying the Persis-Index traverse but had quite a few failures making it just a relaxing two nights around Mt. Persis. The 6 mile road walk was pretty unpleasant and took around 2 hours. The trail is pretty obvious and easy to follow once you reach it, but very steep and a bit overgrown. Not a big deal except for the return trip; it rained the night before and all the overgrown foliage had me completely soaked by the time I got back down the the logging roads. It's about as steep as a trail can get without handholds and scrambling, so going is slow to the top.

First night I got my phone wet and it wouldn't charge, so I abandoned the idea of attempting Index as it had my GPS and route notes. And the whole ridge was socked in clouds almost all day, so it will have to wait for another attempt. Thankfully after baking my phone in the sun half the day it eventually took a charge and I relocated my camp to the summit of Persis.  Just lounged around and did some drawing, not the intended goal but still a good day. Was hoping for an amazing sunrise but instead woke up to being inside a cloud, slightly disappointing.

As far as just Persis, this is entirely about the destination, it's beautiful up there. Everything leading up to it is rather unpleasant. The Index traverse looks to be mostly snow free, couldn't see one of the major gullies from my perspective though. Will be back to reattempt.
