A day trip to Pyramid Peak via Tacoma Creek. As many of you know the Tahoma Creek trail is unmaintained and at the start you have to resort to the river banks/boulders. Regaining the trail about a mile in there are couple of places where landslides have left left the trail just a foot or less wide. I suspect the these places will slide completely fairly soon so bear that in mind if you are heading out this way. Going all the way up the river bed could a possibility depending on the flow and where the Tahoma has decided to braid! From car to suspension took me 2 hours- Im giving my times but you should know I’m 66, slow but steady! From the suspension bridge you are on the Wonderland trail so steady uphill at a reasonable grade all the way to the junction with Mirror Lakes trail (1 hr). The wild flowers particularly lupins and aster and louseworts had started a bit back and continued in profusion until Pyramid Peak base 1hour. The trail is easily followed. From the base to the peak took me 1.5 hours, I found it hard work on the legs and lungs, note to self must train harder! I enjoy scrambling on rocks so found the upper section much easier than the steep dirt trail lower down, not sure why this classed 3 as a scramble??? I certainly had to use hands on the steep dust but not on the rocks. Despite appearances there is a big flat top to Pyramid, covered with low growing juniper. Lovely breeze on top so no bugs but clouds started piling in so I didn’t stop long. Didn’t fancy slithering down mud if it started raining. Ofcourse clouds all cleared by the time I got down 1hour later. From here lovely meadow wandering then descent to the suspension bridge in 1.5 hours. On to car 1.75h. At the end of a long day the boulder hopping on the creek banks was tiring and took concentration but was OK. The variety of rock is fascinating.
A wonderful day.
Back at the car CBD cream on feet and knees for the 2 drive home.
