I had a strict turnaround time today, so I ended up stopping at the saddle before the last push to the true summit. Up to that point, there was only one short, less than ten feet, easy scramble. I’m a short, clumsy coward, and even I had no problems with this. If you only make it to the saddle, this hike is still absolutely worth it, fyi.
There’s currently a large cairn at the turnoff from the PCT, see photo, but these seem to come and go on this trail, so who knows how long it will be there. I don’t think it would be difficult to find as long as you’re paying attention. Start looking for it after you’ve gone down some short switchbacks, and if you come to a tarn on your left, you’ve gone a bit too far.
The road is fine for sedans. No bathroom at the th, so plan accordingly. I usually stop at that gas station off exit 34 to fuel up and use their usually clean bathrooms. Otherwise, there are pit toilets at the Gold Creek Pond th right off exit 54. Don’t forget to pack out or bury your tp if you go in the woods.
