This is a slog. Give yourself the time to get up to Cub Peak! The views are significantly more interesting from the peak than from the lake. Plus, if you get up to the peak the first time, you'll never have to do any of it again. We're in good hiking shape, and we did this on already sore muscles at the pace of a little over a mile per hour, including ample time for breathers and a snack. Use poles, especially for the way down. You'll especially want them coming down from the peak, where the way trail is steep and slippery. This is definitely a hike to do for accomplishment/completionist reasons, rather than an exciting finale. We packed out a bag of tobacco that someone had left on the ridge before the peak. It's handy to keep a plastic shopping bag in your pack, so that you can take litter out with you.

Not sure how the "Red Man" would feel about having a chewing tobacco named in his honor - or littering the mountainside for that matter.
