Lena Lake — Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2021

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal

Whew!  Several WTA work parties have worked hard to improve many areas of the tread which allowed 2 horses and 4 pack mules to take heavy gear up to the second bridge, about 2.5 miles up the trail, for the bridge replacement project that starts in September.

Hikers have benefited from the work as it also made the trail safer and also easier on everyone’s feet (lots of toe tripping rocks and roots covered or gone!)

The bridge is down, but a bypass trail was made to allow everyone to get past the site until the new bridge is built - just follow the pink flagging!  There was a billet cut out of the tree (now a log) for hikers to walk through/get past without having to climb over or crawl under.  The logs are for the new stringers and sills (substructure) for the bridge, and we need ALL of the two logs for the new bridge.

As the day warmed up, horseflies showed up.  I found some red huckleberries and saw a lot of Oregon grape berries.
