Trip Report

Ashland Lakes — Friday, Sep. 3, 2021

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

We have a Subaru Forester and had to turn around because the road conditions were so horrible.  The road is full of large pot-holes, most of which have muddy water in them.  It is therefore difficult to ascertain how deep some of them are, since one cannot see the bottom.  I would therefore only recommend this trip to a driver with a high clearance vehicle who does not mind driving on a road that requires high vigilance.  Note that our input regarding bug and trail conditions was required, so I filled these out based on prior trip reports, since we didn't actually hike on the trail.

Did you find this trip report helpful?

I think you would have been fine in a Forester. Yes, the potholes are large and deep, but none of them drop into the abyss. Take the proper angle, keeping one side of the car on the rim, and be prepared to go walking speed on much of it.
