Section hiked the PCT section K early September. There's too much information for one trip report, but I'll pass on the following three general observations:
- Going this hike this time of year, I recommend doing the section in the direction north to south (starting at Rainy Pass and ending at Stevens Pass). There were tons of thru-hikers early September and it was great to have them come the other way. It was chance to see them coming, say hi, and chat with some as we stepped off the trail. It would have been a hassle having all of them pass us from behind -- and there were a lot of them.
- Starting from Rainy Pass also allows for a permit camp in the North Cascades for the first night. If starting from Stevens Pass, you need to get the permit before you know where you might want to camp that last night in the park (or hike the 22+ miles through the park the last day).
- Many significant blowdowns through the middle section of this hike. Nothing insurmountable, but be aware and be safe!
