Duckabush River — Friday, Oct. 1, 2021

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal

It was a gorgeous early fall Friday and though there were 3 cars at the trailhead we saw only one person  at the trail’s end on the way back to the car. He reported seeing a bear…we didn’t. There were early fall colors which will peak in a few weeks and a beautiful view from Big Hump which is where we stopped for a 7.9 mile RT day hike. Parts of the gravel road have many potholes to navigate easily in a Subaru Forester. Near to the trailhead we saw a herd of elk grazing next to the road and salmon struggling up the little stream also visible from the car! The lower forest is exquisite and the climb up to Big Hump is well graded and beautiful in a different way. There was lot of water - streams, waterfalls, drippings over mossy rocks and some on trail after a week of rain.
