Cutthroat Lakes via Walt Bailey Trail — Monday, Oct. 11, 2021

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

Had this hike all to ourselves today. It was about 30 degrees when we started hiking at 9:30am and didn't warm up much during the day. Many mushrooms along the way. Trail is very rough in places. Lots of water running down trail. Muddy in spots. Several stream crossings that involved rock hopping. This is a great trail for trekking poles. Did not need gaiters but it started snowing when we were close to Cutthroat Lake basin. Back at cars around 4 pm with a couple of breaks. Despite all the obstacles, it is a very pretty hike.

There is a tight turn-around at the road end, very limited parking, and no bathroom. The trail map said it was 2.88 miles to lake basin but my hiking app registered closer to 3.8 miles one way.
