The trail is in good condition with the exception of compact snow on the trail. We did not use our micropikes but there were a few sections that it would have been helpful to put them on... if this trail sees any more snow though it will quickly become necessary due to the steepness of the upper half. I felt that this trail was easier than i had expected because of the constant switchbacks which cut the intensity of the pitch, but still quite the difficult trail! The bottom half is mostly muddy dirt trail through forest with the occasional stream crossings, but the upper half is all rock and shale so it can be difficult on your feet and ankles. Regardless, the views are wonderful on a clear day once you get to the pass so it's all worth it! The larches are fading and partially covered in snow so they were not the highlight of the hike, so don't expect much for fall color as it is all now covered in a blanket of white.
