We did this hike to see the many fungi along the first part of the trail and knew we would not make it to the Pass. We only went one mile in our 4 1/2 hours on the trail because of the hundreds of fungi! From what we have read there was another 1/2 mile in the forest and in retrospect I wish we had done it, but I was worried the bridge might become slippery if the temperature lowered and it was hard enough for me to make it across the bridge when it wasn't slippery because of its height and the loose cable and broken poles! We have never seen so many fungi or such a large variety on any trail we have hiked! The bridge across Granite Creek is damaged perhaps from a tree falling across it. Some of the posts are broken making the cable loose in those areas. We saw only one other couple who apparently went to the Pass. The trail had several puncheon areas which could be slick if there was ice on them.
