White River to Sunrise — Monday, Oct. 18, 2021

Mount Rainier Area > NE - Sunrise/White River
Sunrise Ghost Town

As the upper road to Sunrise remains closed and is unlikely to reopen, I decided to hike up to Sunrise. It's so strange to see all the buildings boarded up. Even stranger to be the only person there. Kind of like a sci-fi movie where everyone's been 'beamed away.'

This trail is steep... about 2,000' in just over 2 miles. Not much snow going up, though. About 1-2" on the Sunrise Rim Trail, but this part's not steep, so no troubles. It was super-foggy when I first arrived at Sunrise, but after about 10 minutes, the sun broke through and the mountain made an appearance.

The flush restrooms at the Entrance Station and White River Campground are all closed for the season now. There are pit toilets still available in the B Loop at the campground and up in Sunrise.
