Melakwa Lake — Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021

Snoqualmie Region > Snoqualmie Pass
Melakwa Lake by Michelle Hook

Hiked on Saturday 10/30. Arrived to trailhead around 10:40am and found plenty of parking. A lot of people were there for Franklin Falls.

Once we set out on Denny Creek, we didn’t encounter too many others. The day was gorgeous and felt quite warm hiking up in the sun. But I’m glad we packed extra layers for later.

We reached the lake around 1:30/2pm and went to the further end of the big lake to sit on the little piece of land and rock that juts out. It was perfectly in the sun and the wind wasn’t so bad there.

We headed back after about a 45 minute rest for lunch and got back by 4:30pm.

Things to note:
- it was very windy at the lake so having extra layers and a wind breaker are helpful.
- there are a few river crossings. I didn’t trust the log over the first one as it was quite slick, and instead opted to use it for balance with my hands as I crossed on rocks. Waterproof boots are essential here.
- a lot of mud on the trail, especially in the first 30 minutes and icy mud when descending towards the lake. Again, good boots work well. I didn’t feel the need for spikes or poles.
- not sure how accurate our gps was but we clocked in 10 miles total, including walking from Franklin falls parking and to the other end of the lake.
