Since Freestone Inn and cabins reopened this week we headed over for our 20th year fall stay. They had to clean and reseal the lodge and cabins after the valley fire had crested Sandy Butte which abuts the property.
We like to do the walk to the Mazama Country Store via the ski/bike trail. It is 2.2 miles one way crossing under highway 20 via a well placed culvert. Crossing the bridge over the Methow River is usually a good spot to photograph fall foliage along the river. Unfortunately the leaves had fallen.
The store was open, masks required. Food is offered out in courtyard where tables are provided for dining or sipping warm brews.
Heading back we noticed how close the fire had come to the valley since recent snow highlighted the denuded forest above. I don’t know why but this 4+ mile walk is more tiring than the hike to Blue Lake!
