Kachess Lake — Friday, Jan. 28, 2022

Snoqualmie Region > Snoqualmie Pass
Our first view of mostly frozen Lake Kachess

My friend and I signed up for an REI snowshoe experience, my second time doing so. REI provides poles, snowshoes and gaiters if needed (not needed this time). Two REI guides attend, providing trail guide leadership, instruction on snowshoeing, hot beverages at lunch, handwarmers, and in general, knowledgeable and friendly company. Our group was about nine or ten snowshoeing newbies and the two guides. There is a fee of $79 for REI members, $99 for non- members. These events often sell out far in advance.

We met at the REI designated meeting point right near Lake Kachess between 10-10:30 AM. It was easy to find, roads were clear and parking was abundant at the trailhead. No privy there so take care of that need before arriving.

At 10:30 we all gathered, got the gear and after brief instruction headed out down the off-road vehicle "road". It was pretty icy, crunchy and as a result quite loud walking along in the snowshoes, almost comical. Fairly soon after we turned into the forest and made our way down to Lake Kachess. The sight of the vast lake suddenly opening up before us was breathtaking! We walked on further and eventually came to a rise where we ate lunch/snacks/hot drinks. This was so pleasant and peaceful.

People who came together sort of stayed together and there was no forced small talk or awkwardness. Masking wasn't required out doors and people kept their space. After lunch we circled back through the forest and back to the cars, arriving about 1:00. A short de-brief and we were heading home. Easy.

The whole trip was quite fun and though cold, and tons of snow piled all around, all super easy and do-able. REI provides these experiences and its such a great way to get your feet wet trying something new, especially with them providing gear and expertise. I highly recommend trying one if interested.
