Trip Report

Copper Creek Hut Snowshoe — Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022

Mount Rainier Area > SW - Longmire/Paradise

The huts are closed for day use but you can access an overnighter through the www.mtta.org webpage. We did just that and luckily was able to get a weekend date several months ago. Copper Creek is the ONLY hut available to do this in the north district. Bruni's Snow Bowl, The Yurt and High Hut are closed for day and night use. BATHROOMS remain open.

Saturday we drove the 8 road in muddy shape then continued to the 92 road on the one way uphill, compacted ice, snow and mud to upper the sno-park. Make sure you have 4-wheel drive, high access, and chains

The upper parking area had few cars. The groomed ski area begins just past the yellow gate, observe the sign SKIERS IN THE MIDDLE, SNOWSHOES TO THE SIDES. Our party did our best to stay to the side in snowshoes, however there are a lot of boot steps in the middle and across the groomed areas. Snow is spotty with spring melt outs, continuing to flat out icy just past Coopers Loop and up to Copper Creek the entire way.

4.6 miles each way with full overnight packs, food, bags, clothes, and gear took us 3 hrs up and 2 hrs down. We brought a sled and I ended up using it for a break.

Lovely sunsets and spectacular sunrise.
