It’s about a mile from the gate to the trailhead of staircase rapids. The road is a nice walk along the river with views of the snow covered treetops in the mountains. We started by crossing the bridge to start the loop on the southwest side of the river. Once over the bridge the intermittent snow starts and trail becomes difficult to follow. We started by following the foot path in the snow but that becomes unreliable as you continue into the woods. Our GPS kept us on the right track and we had almost reached the bridge… but the obstacles became too difficult. We had our 5 month old and didn’t think it was worth it to keep maneuvering over and under several downed trees. Overall still a nice time spent outside.
