This trail is easily my favorite in the entire Eastern WA, so today was my third time there. It’s a long drive from Seattle, but it does give a chance to embrace diversity of nature in this beautiful state: from old growth of Snoqualmie forest to snowy mountains to prairie and finally to the real kid-sized desert.
Keep in mind there’re no facilities at the trailhead. It was rather packed with cars when I arrived at 1 pm. Weather was perfect, warm and sunny, and still not too hot. The first dune was crowded as usual, so head to the second one for solitude. Sand is dry now, so climbing dunes is fun. Getting sand out of shoes and pockets is another fun. Life is starting to emerge from sand, lots of fresh greenery, tiny flowers and little bugs. Oh, and contrail-crossed sun halo was fantastic today.
