Tried going for Baring this Saturday 4/2 with a mountaineering class. We only made it to a couple hundred feet below the boulder field before turning around, but can give the conditions up to this point.
Road was clear until .4 miles from the Barclay Lake TH. We parked just before the snow and walked the rest of the way.
The climbers trail up to the ridge was snow free until 3500 ft. We followed close to the stream/gulley on the west side for most of it, occasionally finding the pink ribbons so we were generally on the right track. Once we hit deep enough snow, we took the gulley the rest of the way up to the ridge.
The ridge is nice until you need to traverse. The snow wasn’t quite deep enough to bury all the logs and debris as we were occasionally tripping or post holing. Also wasn’t great for side or plunge stepping. Hopefully new snow this week will bring better conditions.
Took us 12 hours round trip, 6 up and down as down climbing the first section was harder than climbing up.
