Poo Poo Point, Poo Poo Point - Chirico Trail & West Tiger 3 — Thursday, Apr. 7, 2022

Issaquah Alps > Tiger Mountain

I got turned around by a HUGE cougar at about 1:30 am Thursday morning on the Poo Poo Point high school trail! It didn’t show any signs of aggression, but still… 😳

I started at the Chirico trailhead at 9pm for a nice creepy slow meander in the woods. Up to 💩💩 Point, across and up to West Tiger #3, down Section Line to the high school trail, and intended to go back up the high school trail and over to my car at Chirico. I got turned around about 1.2 miles from the bottom of the high school trail, or about 0.4 miles up from the intersection of the Section Line trail, and ended up doing the road march hiker walk of shame back to my car. You can see where on the maps, it’ll be south of the lap 7 icon on my track map.

I saw a light twinkling in and out of view ahead. At first assumed it was a city light, but stopped when it seemed too big and erratic. Turned my headlamp off and it disappeared. Turned it back on and it reappeared. Crap. Turned it on full blast and it shot to the side and was joined by another one just like it to make a pair. A pair of yellowish-gold, LARGE, and set wayyy too far apart eyes to be anything small like a bobcat. Then they did that dip low and juke side to side thing that cats do when they’re trying to figure out what they’re looking at. Crap crap. Based on eye size and distance apart it could only have been a fully grown mountain lion, roughly 50-70 yards down the trail. I made some manly noises to give it second thoughts about being too curious. It didn’t budge, just kept doing a 15:1 scale imitation of a house cat looking at something interesting. I found my nearest sharp emotional support rock and started getting disappeared the other way. It never got aggressive and didn’t show any indication of following, but I had my head on a swivel all the way down to the highway anyway.

Still looking for info on if we’re supposed to report cougar sightings to the park service or not.

Did you find this trip report helpful?

Great report and glad you are ok. Terrifying!! We all know they’re out there and it’s interesting to hear about encounters. I was on WT3 after dusk last week and it’s always on my mind, really one of the only things I worry about in the mountains. I think I would have 💩💩’d my pants.

Glad I’m not the only one that wouldn’t have just said “meh”. 😂 Realistically, I know they don’t want anything to do with us and it’s pretty safe. But still… 😅

I don’t want to scare anyone away from hiking the area. They really do avoid people, they just don’t expect nutjobs to be wandering around out there at 1am. If I wasn’t paying attention it probably would have run off before I got there, but maybe not if it had a cub in the area. I mainly just want to remind people that they’re not alone out there, so keep an eye out. I was also hiking alone and my new shoes are sneaky sneaky so I probably caught it off guard.

You are such an entertaining writer I thought you were pulling my leg until I realized oh - no this guy was probably just a really funny guy with a good sense of humor that luckily isn't as delicious as he is entertaining.
Awesome photo of Issaquah and good details with the map.

Holy cow. Was the second fully grown you think based on the eyes? Didn't know they paired up like that.

I only saw one. I was pretty tired when I posted this and I had to rewrite it a second time because the site crashed, I’m surprised any of it makes sense. 😅 I meant that at first I only saw one eye, but after I turned the high beams on and got its attention it moved its head from behind whatever was blocking the other eye to look at me. That’s when I realized how big and far apart the eyes were and started acting like anything but a bunny.

Thanks a lot -- now I'll never get anyone to hike Poo Poo Point with me.

Seriously, though, I really enjoyed your report and photos. I don't think a trip report has ever made me laugh before. And you were very brave!

Thanks for your report and glad you are okay! I would have 💩 my pants.

A woman in a hiking group I’m in had a similar encounter last night at dusk. She said there were 2 cougars. It sounds like they are frequenting the area (after all it is their home!). Hope everyone stays safe out there.

Oh wow, in the same area? A couple other times hiking the area at night I got a little creeped out like I was being watched, and thought I heard soft cougar purrs once but assumed I imagined it. I think they roam a large area and assumed they might have moved off by now.

I think we’re pretty safe as long as we don’t run away and look like a big mouse lol. Still a good idea to keep an eye out for them though. They can get a little sketchy if they have a cub with them, so the sooner and farther away you see them the better. I think I surprised this one because I was coming up a hill and we couldn’t see each other until I reached the crest, and I was being pretty quiet with my light on low.
