Columbia National Wildlife Refuge - Crab Creek — Saturday, Apr. 30, 2022

Central Washington > Potholes Region
Lost Lake

For anyone who loves geology, rocks, columnar basalt, bird watching, or admiring oft overlooked places in our state- the Drumheller Channel National Natural Landmark is a worthy place to explore! My mom and I both listen to Nick Zentner’s YouTube channel and podcast so we like to see the places he highlights on his shows in-person. We left Ellensburg around 7:35 AM on a gray day and arrived at the Crab Creek Marsh Unit #3 trailhead around 8:45 AM. There were no other cars there when we arrived. We went around the metal gate and turned right onto the jeep road. Using Google maps I picked out some areas I wanted to see up close and some animal trails that might get us there. We explored for about two hours and found all sorts of natural wonders. Beautiful grasses, wildflowers, lichen, birds, and of course rocks! So much more to see so I will be back.

Zentner is a good guy - isn't that where he lost his hammer?

Yes!

Big fan here! Zentner has helped me appreciate Central WA a lot more. And yes, exactly where he lost the hammer. We didn’t see it either. Oh well!

The "ten foot tall grass" is actually Common Reed (Phragmites australis). Very nice photos.
