Camp Muir — Saturday, May. 21, 2022

Mount Rainier Area > SW - Longmire/Paradise

A small group of us did this hike in preparation for a summit attempt next month. It was an absolutely beautiful day, so warm that we shed our warmer layers within the first hour. We didn't quite reach Camp Muir as the trek took us longer than expected and we could see the weather turning in the distance, so we decided to head back down. We did get to 8900 feet in elevation, most of us with waterproof hiking boots and micro spikes, one of us with snow shoes for part of the trip and just boots the rest of the way. Gaiters came in handy with all the snow which starts at the trailhead. With the sun warming the snow it was a little mushy for the first mile or so but was firmer as expected as we went up. Do not skimp on sunscreen, and bring more water than you think you'll need (I'd suggest at least 3 liters). This is a very challenging but enjoyable hike, and while the mountain was very crowded everyone was so friendly and encouraging.
