Trip Report

Duckabush River — Thursday, Jun. 9, 2022

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal

This was a 4-day WTA backcountry response team led by Mason White.  We were a group of 5 volunteers.

The Duckabush Road/NF 2510 is badly potholed once you leave the pavement behind.  A standard car can handle it if you drive carefully.

On Thursday we hiked into 5 Mile Camp in a steady rain and made camp, and then proceeded up the trail another 2 miles to the park boundary to scout conditions.  Between the trailhead and 5 Mile Camp, most blowdowns had been cleared by previous work parties this spring.  There were only a couple of duck-under logs.  Some logs had been cleared beyond the camp, but as we approached the park boundary there were a number that remained to be cleared.  It was also quite brushy in places.

The weather improved on Friday, and we had intermittent showers from Friday to Sunday. We devoted most of our efforts to one nettlesome 4-foot log, about a quarter-mile upriver from 5 Mile, that was quite fractured, causing our saw to bind repeatedly.  After more than two days of effort, we finally got it cleared.

Five Mile Camp was quite crowded on Saturday night, with about a dozen tents including our crew's.
