Today was beautiful! I hadn't heard of this hike before searching for 'Spring Wildflower Hikes" last night. Read a few trip reports and decided to drive over and see what there was to see.
We got to the trail head at about 9 am and there were just a couple of spots left out of the (maybe) 15. The road is EXTREMELY narrow, so when it says that there is no parking on the road, there really is absolutely no parking available on the road.
Most of the trail is an old utility road so the grade is great and it's plenty wide for people to pass each other without feeling like you have to tippy toe around the flowers. There is tons of balsam root and lupin blooming along the trail, mostly concentrated around the trail head and then up on Sunrise and Little Bear. Thousands of Prairie Stars peaked out from the grasses and there are lots of tiny flowers that I can't remember the names of hiding along the trail as well.
My 14 yr old and I enjoyed watching 4 or 5 mule dear grazing on the hillside and a couple of hawks having a great time zooming around in the air above a ravine.
The views of the surrounding green hills, and when you get further up, the snow capped Enchantments, are gorgeous right now. We ate our lunches on top of Sunrise and were pleased to find some large logs perfectly placed to lounge on and enjoy the view.
We didn't do any of the loops as the boy wonder wanted to get home to friends, but we got our fill of fresh air, the glorious smell of dirt and pine trees, and flowers!
As a reminder, there is no water on this trail and very, very little shade so come prepared and enjoy!
