Trip Report

Umtanum Creek Canyon — Wednesday, Apr. 24, 2024

Central Washington > Yakima

We combined this hike with several others for a really full day. It was cool to have the basalt towering above us.  Immediately you will be welcomed with birdsong.  It becomes apparent the great variety of birds that call this creek home.  We strolled along with no problems.  The creek was not difficult to pass with a few carefully placed steps.  When you get to the thicket of trees, things become trickier.  Paths seem to diverge and it is difficult to follow any one set trail.  We blazed on for about a mile more before turning around.  The birdsong was amazing.  To tell you the truth, the beginning was actually my favorite part.  That’s where I thought the most birdsong was, as well as visually seeing birds of prey by the basalt columns on the right hand side.  All and all it was a nice addition but I would not make a long drive for this as a stand alone hike.
