Trip Report

Sauk Mountain — Wednesday, Jun. 5, 2024

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
This was a bit of an exploratory trip.  The trees across the road from the last report have been removed but snow on the road still prevents you from driving past the second switchback from the official parking lot.  There's a small turnout that can fit four vehicles.

It was a very frosty morning when I arrived at 8:00 with clouds moving up and over the mountain.  From the official parking lot, the trail was clear of snow though there was a lot of scree on the bed.  Where people have shortcutted the trail, the winter runoff has narrowed the tread and there was some sloughing in a few places.  Things were going pretty easy though as I passed a few smaller snow fields until I reached just below the last couple of switchbacks where there's a large snow field laying across them.  The steepness of the slope and the fact that the surrounding vegetation was icy as well were the biggest challenge.  I didn't have my spikes and the hard crust on the snow made it difficult to kick in steps.  If you slipped, you could slide pretty far before regaining your footing.  I found a seat and after a snack and a phone call I was contemplating what to do when thick clouds rolled in.  So, I decided I was satisfied with my little adventure.  By the time I hit the bottom of the switchbacks the sun was out, some views were back, and a lot of the frost was gone.

In the past I've hiked it all the way in soft snow without problems.  If snow isn't your thing I'd give it another two weeks at least. I've been here on a clear day and the views are fantastic.

I was literally wondering today what conditions were like (I was there 3 weeks ago) and whether any snow fell during the last precip event. Thank you for the report! Hopefully with the warmer temps coming in here it’ll thaw out soon and be more accessible in terms of finishing the hike!

Your report gave me hope, so thank you as well. I guess we'll both just have to wait a bit longer, but it will be worth it. Safe hiking!
